Richard Allen opens his paper in Science, Transforming Earthquake Detection?, by observing that “Earthquake-related Twitter messages can outrun the shaking…”:

In his article, Richard provides us with a glimpse into what the future of seismology could look like. The propects of integrating Twitter streams and data from cheap, ubiquitous sensors into our traditional automated processing systems is exciting. Indeed, it is what drives much of our R&D at OSOP. OSOP Darien and Shakemapper products were founded on the idea that by sacrificing station quality for density, we improve location time and can generate more detailed the shake maps for use by the civil defense community.
